As a medical marijuana physician, I frequently hear from patients who wonder whether cannabis products might help their pets — particularly dogs and cats suffering from arthritis, anxiety, seizures, or age-related discomfort. Pet CBD has become a significant market, but it exists entirely separately from Florida's medical marijuana program. This guide explains what Florida pet owners should know about CBD for pets, important safety considerations, and why human medical cannabis products should never be given to animals.

Important Disclaimer: Florida's MMJ Program Is for Humans Only

Florida's medical marijuana program under Statute 381.986 is exclusively for human patients. Your medical marijuana card does not authorize you to purchase cannabis products for your pets, and products from licensed Florida dispensaries (MMTCs) are formulated for human use. Pet CBD products are sold through a separate, unregulated market — pet stores, online retailers, and some veterinary offices. These products are derived from hemp (containing less than 0.3% THC) and are not part of the state medical marijuana program.

What Research Says About CBD for Pets

Research on CBD for animals is still emerging, but early studies are promising. A 2018 study at Cornell University found that CBD oil significantly reduced pain and increased activity in dogs with osteoarthritis. A Colorado State University study showed that CBD reduced seizure frequency in epileptic dogs by 33%. Other preliminary research suggests potential benefits for pet anxiety, particularly separation anxiety and noise phobia in dogs. However, the FDA has not approved any CBD products for animals, and the research base is much smaller than for human use.

Safety Considerations for Pets

Critical safety rules for pet owners: never give your pet THC-containing products. Dogs have significantly more CB1 receptors in their brains than humans, making them extremely sensitive to THC. THC toxicity in dogs can cause disorientation, tremors, vomiting, urinary incontinence, and in severe cases, seizures. Cats are similarly sensitive. This is why human medical marijuana products — which typically contain THC — should never be given to animals. Only use products specifically formulated for pets, with verified lab testing confirming THC content below 0.3% (ideally zero). Common CBD side effects in pets are mild: drowsiness, dry mouth, and mild gastrointestinal upset.

Choosing CBD Products for Your Pet

If you decide to try CBD for your pet, look for products specifically formulated for animals (not human products), third-party lab testing (certificate of analysis) confirming cannabinoid content and absence of contaminants, clear dosing guidelines based on your pet's weight, products from reputable companies with established track records, and organic, US-grown hemp with no artificial additives. Dosing is typically calculated by weight — most pet CBD products recommend 1–5mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight, starting at the low end. Always consult your veterinarian before starting CBD, particularly if your pet takes other medications.

Talk to Your Veterinarian

While I can provide general educational information as a physician, pet CBD decisions should involve your veterinarian. Vets can assess whether CBD is appropriate for your pet's specific condition, identify potential interactions with existing medications, recommend appropriate dosing, and monitor your pet's response over time. Some Florida veterinarians are knowledgeable about pet CBD, while others may be less familiar — if your vet is hesitant, consider seeking a second opinion from a veterinarian experienced in integrative or holistic pet care.
