How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Florida

Getting your Florida medical marijuana card is straightforward. Canna Clinic MD walks every patient through each step of the OMMU certification process — from initial eligibility through dispensary access.

Step 01

Determine Your Eligibility

  • You must first determine if you have a qualifying diagnosis. Contact our clinic at (561) 571-9076 for a free eligibility discussion.
  • Florida residency required: valid FL driver's license or state ID, or proof of 31+ consecutive days of residency.
  • Must be 18 or older. Patients under 18 may qualify with a designated caregiver and two physician certifications.
  • Must have a qualifying medical condition — including chronic pain, PTSD, cancer, epilepsy, anxiety, and many more.
Step 02

Schedule & Attend Your Evaluation

  • Florida law (Section 381.986, Florida Statutes) requires an in-person physical examination for all new patients.
  • During your appointment, Dr. Stratt will receive informed consent, review your medical history, and assess whether medical cannabis is an appropriate treatment.
  • Your doctor will determine your specific dosing plan and discuss methods of administration — including vaporizers, capsules, oral tinctures, topicals, and smokable flower.
  • Bring valid Florida photo ID, medical records documenting your condition from your diagnosing physician, and your current medication list.
  • Your medical chart must contain documentation from the physician or provider who originally diagnosed your condition.
Step 03

Compassionate Use Registry & Patient ID Card

  • If certified, your name is entered into Florida's Compassionate Use Registry same-day, allowing you to legally obtain medical marijuana from state-approved dispensaries.
  • You will then register at the OMMU portal (knowthefactsmmj.com) and pay the state registration fee.
  • A temporary patient ID is issued via email within 1–2 business days — valid immediately at all Florida dispensaries.
  • Your physical Florida Medical Marijuana patient ID card arrives by mail within 1–2 weeks and is valid for 12 months.
  • We take your photo on-site and upload all required documents to the state on your behalf.
Step 04

Visit a State-Approved Dispensary

  • Once you have your temporary or physical ID card, you can visit any state-approved medical marijuana dispensary in Florida.
  • You may order up to a 70-day supply from your certifying physician per Florida law.
  • Dr. Stratt will recommend appropriate products and delivery methods based on your specific condition and symptoms.
  • Dispensary staff can also assist with product selection once you arrive with your valid patient ID.

Florida Medical Marijuana Card Requirements (2026)

To qualify for a medical marijuana card in Florida, you must meet all of the following requirements under Florida Statute 381.986.

Florida Residency

You must be a legal resident of Florida or a seasonal resident who has lived in the state for at least 31 consecutive days per year. Acceptable proof includes a valid Florida driver's license, state ID, utility bills, lease agreements, or official mail.

Age 18 or Older

You must be at least 18 years old. Minors may qualify with a parent or legal guardian serving as a designated caregiver and certifications from two separate OMMU-certified physicians.

Qualifying Medical Condition

You must have a documented diagnosis of a qualifying condition — including chronic pain, cancer, PTSD, epilepsy, anxiety, depression, and more. Florida also allows certification for "other debilitating conditions of the same kind or class."

OMMU Physician Certification

You must be evaluated and certified by a physician registered with Florida's Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU). Dr. Stratt is an OMMU-certified physician who can evaluate and certify qualifying patients at our Boca Raton office.

OMMU & the Compassionate Use Registry

Florida's medical marijuana program is administered by the Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU), a division of the Florida Department of Health. The OMMU maintains the Compassionate Use Registry — a secure database that tracks all certified medical marijuana patients and their physician orders.

After Dr. Stratt certifies you at our Boca Raton office, your information is submitted to the Compassionate Use Registry the same day. You then complete the patient portion of the OMMU application online at the state portal and pay the $75 state application fee. Once processed, your temporary patient ID is emailed to you — typically within 1–2 business days — and is immediately valid at all Florida dispensaries.

Your physical patient ID card arrives by mail within 1–2 weeks and is valid for 12 months. The OMMU sends renewal reminders before your card expires, and our office also tracks your renewal dates to ensure uninterrupted access to your medication.

Renewals & Follow-Ups

Your Florida patient ID card is valid for 12 months and must be renewed annually through the OMMU portal.

Your physician certification must be renewed every 210 days — approximately every 7 months.

All patients need quarterly follow-up appointments to remain active in the Compassionate Use Registry. Dr. Stratt will evaluate your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

Our office will contact you when renewals and follow-ups are due to ensure uninterrupted access.

Telehealth Renewals

Per Florida House Bill 387 and Section 381.986, Florida Statutes, renewal and follow-up appointments may be completed via telehealth.

New patients and transfers are required by law to attend an in-person examination. Subsequent follow-ups can be conducted remotely.

Telehealth renewal appointments offer the same quality of care with the convenience of attending from home.
