Getting your Florida medical marijuana card is a significant step — but many patients feel uncertain about what comes next. Walking into a dispensary for the first time, choosing from dozens of products, and figuring out the right dose can feel overwhelming. This guide covers everything first-time medical marijuana patients need to know to have a safe, comfortable, and effective experience. Dr. Stratt provides personalized guidance during your evaluation at Canna Clinic MD, but this overview will help you know what to expect.

Your First Dispensary Visit

After receiving your temporary or physical patient ID card, you can visit any state-licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Center (MMTC) in Florida. On your first visit, bring your patient ID card and a valid photo ID. The dispensary will verify your information in the state registry. Most Florida dispensaries have knowledgeable staff (called patient consultants or pharmacists) who can walk you through their product offerings and help you choose based on your physician's recommendations. Don't hesitate to ask questions — dispensary staff are there to help, and no question is too basic.

Choosing Your First Products

Dr. Stratt will recommend specific product types and THC/CBD ratios during your evaluation, but here's what you'll typically find at a Florida dispensary. Tinctures (sublingual drops) are an excellent starting point for new patients because they allow precise dose control — you can start with a very small amount and gradually increase. Vaporizer cartridges offer fast onset and easy use. Capsules and edibles provide consistent, long-lasting effects but take longer to kick in. Topical creams are ideal if your condition involves localized pain or inflammation. Smokable flower is available and offers fast onset, but can be harsh for patients not accustomed to inhaling.

The Golden Rule: Start Low, Go Slow

This is the single most important piece of advice for first-time medical marijuana patients. Start with the lowest recommended dose — even lower than you think you need — and wait for the full onset before taking more. For inhaled cannabis (vaporizer, flower), take one small inhalation and wait 10–15 minutes before taking more. For tinctures, start with 2.5–5mg of THC (or the equivalent CBD amount) and wait 30–45 minutes. For edibles and capsules, start with 2.5–5mg of THC and wait at least 90 minutes — edibles can take up to 2 hours for full effect, and taking more too soon is the most common mistake new patients make.

What to Expect: Common Effects

Medical marijuana affects each person differently based on the product, dosage, delivery method, and individual biology. Common therapeutic effects include pain relief, relaxation, reduced anxiety, improved sleep, and appetite stimulation. Side effects may include dry mouth (very common — keep water nearby), mild drowsiness, slight dizziness, or increased appetite. If you experience any discomfort, remember that the effects are temporary — cannabis effects typically last 1–4 hours for inhaled products and 4–8 hours for edibles. CBD can help counteract any THC-related anxiety if you've taken too much.

Tips for Your First Week

Plan your first experience for a time when you have no obligations — an evening at home is ideal. Have water and light snacks available. Keep a journal noting the product, dose, time, and effects to share with Dr. Stratt at your follow-up. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you understand how cannabis affects you personally. Don't mix cannabis with alcohol during your initial experiences. If you're using cannabis for sleep, take it 30–60 minutes before your desired bedtime. And remember — finding the right product, dose, and routine takes time. Most patients refine their approach over the first few weeks.
