Congratulations on receiving your Florida medical marijuana card — you've completed the most important step. Now comes the practical question: where do you buy your cannabis products? Florida's dispensary system operates through state-licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTCs), and choosing the right one can significantly impact your treatment experience. This guide helps you navigate Florida's dispensary landscape and find the MMTC that best fits your needs.

How Florida's Dispensary System Works

Unlike some states where independent dispensaries operate freely, Florida uses a vertically integrated MMTC model — each licensed operator grows, processes, and sells its own products. This means product selections vary significantly between dispensaries, as each company cultivates different strains and manufactures its own formulations. Florida currently has over a dozen licensed MMTCs operating hundreds of retail locations throughout the state, including multiple options in the Boca Raton, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale areas. You can visit any licensed dispensary in Florida with your valid patient card — you're not restricted to a single location.

What to Look for in a Dispensary

When evaluating dispensaries, consider these factors. Product variety — does the dispensary carry the specific product types (tinctures, vaporizer cartridges, flower, edibles, topicals) and THC/CBD ratios your physician recommended? Staff knowledge — are the patient consultants knowledgeable about different strains, delivery methods, and dosing? Can they answer questions about terpene profiles and cannabinoid content? Location and convenience — is the dispensary accessible from your home? Do they offer delivery? Pricing and discounts — compare prices across dispensaries for similar products, and ask about veteran discounts, senior discounts, loyalty programs, and first-time patient specials. Lab testing — reputable dispensaries provide certificates of analysis (COAs) for their products, showing exact cannabinoid content and confirming the absence of contaminants.

Delivery Services

Many Florida MMTCs offer home delivery, which is especially convenient for patients with mobility limitations or those who live far from retail locations. Delivery is typically free above a minimum order amount and available throughout most of South Florida. When ordering delivery, you'll need to present your patient ID card and photo ID to the delivery driver. This is an excellent option for patients in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach, and surrounding communities.

Your First Purchase: What to Buy

On your first visit, stick to the specific recommendations Dr. Stratt provided during your evaluation. Resist the temptation to buy too many products at once — start with one or two items, evaluate their effectiveness, and adjust from there. Keep notes on each product: strain name, THC/CBD content, delivery method, dosage, onset time, duration, and effects. Share these notes with Dr. Stratt at your next follow-up so he can refine your treatment plan. Most dispensary consultants are happy to help first-time patients navigate their options within the physician's recommendations.
