Overview
Florida's medical marijuana program recognizes that the list of specifically named qualifying conditions does not encompass every medical situation where cannabis may provide meaningful therapeutic benefit. Under the "other debilitating conditions of comparable severity" provision of Florida Statute 381.986, patients with conditions not explicitly listed may still qualify if their physician determines that the condition is of comparable severity and that medical cannabis is an appropriate therapeutic option.
This provision is particularly important because medical science is constantly evolving, and new therapeutic applications for cannabis are being identified through ongoing research. Conditions that commonly qualify under this provision include complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), chronic fatigue syndrome/ME, endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, severe menstrual disorders, Tourette syndrome, Huntington's disease, dystonia, Lyme disease, and many others. The key requirement is that the condition must be debilitating — significantly impairing daily functioning — and that conventional treatments have been insufficient.
The physician must document that the condition is comparable in severity to the named qualifying conditions (cancer, epilepsy, PTSD, MS, etc.) and that there is medical justification for cannabis therapy. Dr. Stratt has extensive experience evaluating patients with conditions that fall under this provision and will conduct a thorough review of your medical history, diagnosis, and symptom profile to determine eligibility.
How Medical Cannabis May Help
The endocannabinoid system is one of the most widespread receptor systems in the human body, involved in regulating pain perception, inflammation, immune function, mood, appetite, sleep, and many other fundamental physiological processes. This broad involvement means cannabis can potentially benefit a wide range of conditions that share underlying mechanisms — particularly those involving chronic pain, inflammation, immune dysregulation, or neurological dysfunction. Research is increasingly supporting cannabis for conditions under this provision. For CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome), the first dedicated study from the UK Medical Cannabis Registry (Evans et al., Brain and Behavior, 2025) found that 64 CRPS patients experienced statistically significant pain reduction, along with improvements in anxiety, sleep, and quality of life. For endometriosis, a study of 252 patients (Sinclair et al., PLOS ONE, 2021) analyzing over 16,000 cannabis sessions found cannabis effective for reducing pelvic pain, GI symptoms, and improving mood — with up to 75.9% of patients rating it moderately or very effective. For chronic fatigue, a study of 1,224 participants (Vigil et al., Medical Cannabis and Cannabinoids, 2022) found that 91.94% experienced decreased fatigue after cannabis use, with an average symptom intensity reduction of 3.48 points on a 10-point scale. If you have a condition that is not specifically listed among Florida's qualifying conditions, Dr. Stratt will conduct a thorough evaluation of your medical history, diagnosis, and symptom profile. Many patients with unlisted conditions have successfully obtained medical cannabis certification. The key factor is whether conventional treatments have been insufficient and whether cannabis represents a reasonable alternative or complementary approach for your specific situation.
Individual results vary. Consult with Dr. Stratt to understand how cannabis therapy may apply to your specific situation.
